The End of Christian America

My husband pointed this article out to me this morning. It says that "the number of Americans who claim no religious affiliation has nearly doubled since 1990, rising from 8 to 15 percent," and "the percentage of self-identified Christians has fallen 10 percentage points since 1990, from 86 to 76 percent." I have to say.. as a Bible believing Christian, these statistics sadden, but don't surprise me. American culture is a funny thing. We overindulge in every physical pleasure possible, and seem to have the Veruca Salt "I want it now" complex... basically, we just don't get it, and we need to wake up.

I believe that one day, we all will be judged, just as the Bible foretells. You might say that you don't believe the Bible is the word of God. If you do your research, you will find that there is overwhelming proof that Jesus did, in fact, live, die, and rise from the dead, and that the Bible is God-breathed. This website is a great starting point.

Secondly, you may choose to believe that there isn't a heaven or a hell; that when we die, that's it. Game over. So, what happens if you're wrong? What if it's not up to you whether or not hell is real? Let's go to Revelation for a minute, shall we? Revelation 21:5-8 says, "He who was seated on the throne said, "I am making everything new!" Then he said, "Write this down, for these words are trustworthy and true." He said to me: "It is done. I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End. To him who is thirsty I will give to drink without cost from the spring of the water of life. He who overcomes will inherit all this, and I will be his God and he will be my son. But the cowardly, the unbelieving, the vile, the murderers, the sexually immoral, those who practice magic arts, the idolaters and all liars—their place will be in the fiery lake of burning sulfur. This is the second death."

Here's the bottom line: For those who accept Jesus Christ and the gift he offers to every single one of us, death has no power, and we get to spend eternity in paradise. But, when there is good, there is also evil. If we choose to ignore or reject that gift, rather than new life, we will meet death with a second death. I don't know about you, but I choose life. Whatever happened to "In God we Trust?" While I don't expect much to change, and I fully anticipate that things will get worse before they get better, I will be praying for a revival in this country. I will pray that Americans will realize that there is someone much, much bigger than themselves who loves and cares for them, and wants the best for their lives. Won't you join me?
